how much can we dl exactly?
unlimited I would assume
I am so going to get an email from my ip.
Wow this shit fuckin owns! Torrents can suck mah balls!
Question though Lhurg. Like the thing you let me use how much do you pay for that? like $30 a month I think you said? And like what does that include? 'cause you said that this place is giving free account for December or whatever but like I still had to login to that site you gave me to be able to download something so how is that free? Do you happen to know if there are free servers that are like this December beta 'cause then I can maybe sign up for a cheaper indexing account or something and use a free downloading server. I don't need anything big as I only have 600kb/s download anyways. Would appreciate some input if you have any to give. Thanks a lot. |
The site I showed you, newzbin.com, is ~$15/year if you signup during their new years promotions.
Usually, free usenet access is unreliable, incomplete and has bad retention. You can get a decent provider for $15/month. |
That doesn't include a downloading server though right? Just the indexing?
the $15 a year is for the indexing, but you don't NEED that, it's just extremely nice. The downloading server is $15 a month depending on who you go through. Lhurg has the god of all Usenet servers, so his costs a bit more.
As for getting a letter, I dunno about that. I've been using usenets for so long now, and have filled up about 800gb of HDs and tons of DVD backups with BS, heh. I never got a letter. And Lhurg DLs even more than me. Like FAR more if you consider his roomates. IBME uses usenets too, same one as lhurg. A lot of people use these things, just not many talk about it I guess. They're pretty amazing though. I download at about 1,200kilbytes a second, and get full DVD movies in about 40 minutes. It's rediculously sweet :) |
I tried it out, and its going 1/8th of my regular downloading speed, im using newsbin, any ideas?
using 8 connections?
no, I mean like an 1\8th the speed it normally goes when using torrents, limewire pro, etc.
and I mean do you have 8 connections open to the server? newsbin should allow you to specify how many connections to use.
oh shit! i completely missed that. Thanks!!!
well if you want trials: www.giganews.com . 3 days for free and is pretty much the best provider you can get.
Nothing I've downloaded works..
I download the stuff then I goto Par-N-Rar and I select the folder and click Go, then something pops up about it does it and always says Missing 5 Recovery Blocks or some other number that always changes. I've downloaded like 10 DVD's now and none of them work. Is it something I'm doing? I got one to extract and say it like completed or w/e but then I look in the folder and there's no image or anything. |

haha, that would be in less than a day. |
Yeah try an hour lol. That's why I didn't bother with it. This usenet one is half decent and only $15 for a month. Just got Pulse.
Now I'm getting this problem where shit I have doesn't appear to download. Like when I search with Par-n-Rar it says it's there and it goes through the process of doing it's little check thing but when I go look through my harddrive the folder isn't even there! Wtf!
check the cache folder, sometimes thing dont decrypt and so the encrypted files will still be there
But how would I manually decrypt them?
you will have to search the grabit website/forums for yenc ydecr or something similar. I know its there because i've had the problem perviously.
I assume because you are having this problem that you changed the directory where the files are downloaded to? If so, go to the groups list and refresh/download a new list, that should fix the problem. |
No I didn't change anything. I just happened all of a sudden. I did that refresh stuff and it didn't seem to do anything so I deleted everything and reinstalled it lol.
It happened again. I think it's because I deleted one of the groups folders from the download directory so instead of re-creating the folder it just keeps it in the cache. Now to figure out how to fix it.
search for newsleecher and download it. I find it better than grabit as it doesnt have these decrypt problems
lhurgoyf whats this amazing usenet server that you subscribe to? and is it possible to successfully take advantage of usenet on a mac? or do i not have the necessary programs available to me?
iceblade maybe you can give me a rundown of how this works. im reading the stuff from this post and the links associated with it but im still a bit lost. theres some subscription i have, and i have news reader software, i find files, download them.. thats about all i understand so far. theres NZB Sites and search sites, but you need to be ANOTHER subscription fee for the search sites? im confused what the first subscription place is (giganews?) if you also have another one like http://www.binnews.com ? |
You have a usenet provider, like an ISP, which your subscribe to. I use giganews.
You need an application which can download and decode the binary files you download from usenet: grabit, newsleecher, etc. You have to find the files. newsleecher offers a super search which costs $$. Sites such as newzbin.com index the contents of usernet much like a torrent tracker (nzb files are uploaded by moderators). You also can search individual files through newzbin, although not as thoroughly as with say newsleecher supersearch. A place like newzbin costs ~$15 a year. So you end with somewhere from $5-30 a month for access to usenet. Then for best options you have a small cost for indexing services. If you download a lot then this is a great deal and a great overall resource. You can even go an extra lvl and get ssl with your downloads so no one would ever be able to tell what you downloaded. You will never get an ISP telling you downloaded xx.zip off of usenet, not going to happen. They can only tell that you are eating up bandwidth, that is all. Ice can cover everything else since he recently made the plunge ;o |
usenet rocks. Been using it for a few years now, and don't know what i'd do without it.

lol. alright. ice, get your ass in here. i actually do download quite a bit. i have multiple operating systems and enjoy having games for both, and i'll probably continue to download music using OiNK.me.uk (private tracker) because it has a vast library, but i maybe ill be able to lose my netflix subscription if i pickup usenet. i get 3 dvds at amy given time and i rip them when i get them and send them back. would usenet be able to replace that? |
