re-install whatever OS you are running...otherwise run spyware, adware, virus proggies and hope for the best. i usually re-install at least once every 1 1/2- 2 years just to get rid of any random crap that might be getting by any scanning programs i run. if ur lookin for free programs try avg for virus scanner, i use spybot http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...ml?tag=lst-0-1, and adaware for spyware and stuff.

well that's pretty vague...

1. scan. i use avg, adaware, spybot search and destroy. all are free.

2. it's a shot in the dark, but do a defrag.

3. take your side panel off your box. clean the damn dust out of it. dust=heat. heat=dead/dying comp. while you're in there check the hsf (heat sink and fan) to make sure it's still seated correctly. it needs to be firm against the cpu.

4. update. make sure all of your drivers are up to date.

5. do a system restore to an earlier point.

6. reformat. this would be a last resort if nothing else works.

remember to never hard-shutdown your pc if it seems to have locked up. watch for the hdd light. if it's flashing, then it's doing something, writing to the hard drive. if you shut it down while something important is writing (say, and update), you may corrupt something, causing system instability. give it a while and see if it does something on it's own.

i've ran all the free stuff there did that before nothin on it, defragged several times(used professional diskkeeper, got it free from somewhere), i've been using windows nemesis 4 with a sata harddrive which supposedly 4 has probs running on satas. the hardware inside the case is no older than 6 months, the motherboard and ram are brand new. its been doing ok recently since i swapped out my power supply, but it still does it randomly just not as much.

Look at the whole mother board and make sure there are no capicators (they look like little batteries) with tiny splits or that are swelled up a little bit. I know this sounds crazy but i had a mobo that the powe rsuply went on and it damaged like 3-4 caps and they were hidden by the other hardware in the case such as a cap between cards. Also make sure all power connectors are correctly and securely connected. If that doesn't work try switching those devices between the different usb plugs and whatnot.

using windows nemesis 3 now, and the motherboard was fine. hopefully nemesis 3 will work fine(i reformatted like 12 times with nemesis 4.....and by 12 i mean like 1 or 2 o.O )
