Pluto has an atmosphere made up of nitrogen.
As for it being a ball of ice, You could techincally say Jupitar is just a ball of gas, or Saturn is just a ball of gas. And about us noobs debating it, I beleive you are conveniantly thinking that this decision is unanimous.
I don't believe Pluto should have been named a planet to begin with, although it will be interesting to see the criteria for which a planet will be named.
