the $15 a year is for the indexing, but you don't NEED that, it's just extremely nice. The downloading server is $15 a month depending on who you go through. Lhurg has the god of all Usenet servers, so his costs a bit more.
As for getting a letter, I dunno about that. I've been using usenets for so long now, and have filled up about 800gb of HDs and tons of DVD backups with BS, heh. I never got a letter. And Lhurg DLs even more than me. Like FAR more if you consider his roomates.
IBME uses usenets too, same one as lhurg. A lot of people use these things, just not many talk about it I guess. They're pretty amazing though.
I download at about 1,200kilbytes a second, and get full DVD movies in about 40 minutes. It's rediculously sweet :)
