religion provides solace for those who can not rely on themselves. it's a safety net that people find comforting when "times are bad." it does help people understand the concepts of social responsibility though, which i do believe in. i can't say i, personally, never got anything from it.
if common religion wasn't accepting and understanding, i can assure you, almost no one would be sitting on cold benches at 10 am on gameday.
blood, i'd have to say there really isn't much of a difference, aside from the actual definitions. in the end, discipline, and our instinctive will-to-survive are probably things that we learn to balance when we go through life. many people who were not forced into a religion, or fell ill towards the idea of religion due to various reasons (hypocracy, far-fetched ideas, etc) and still understand how to survive, probably think they have strong grasp on self-belief, because they probably had to figure it out walden style. religion is just an instruction manual of balance for those who never really could grasp the concept that no matter how bad or good something may be in life, you can only appreciate it because you know what the other end of the spectrum feels like. religion can help you achieve that balance, and make you feel as though you have a person watching your back at all times, helping you make the right decisions, and picking you up when you fall.
but then again we are only here for a short amount of time and none of what i even say really matters. we should probably just enjoy what we have.
