well that's pretty vague...
1. scan. i use avg, adaware, spybot search and destroy. all are free.
2. it's a shot in the dark, but do a defrag.
3. take your side panel off your box. clean the damn dust out of it. dust=heat. heat=dead/dying comp. while you're in there check the hsf (heat sink and fan) to make sure it's still seated correctly. it needs to be firm against the cpu.
4. update. make sure all of your drivers are up to date.
5. do a system restore to an earlier point.
6. reformat. this would be a last resort if nothing else works.
remember to never hard-shutdown your pc if it seems to have locked up. watch for the hdd light. if it's flashing, then it's doing something, writing to the hard drive. if you shut it down while something important is writing (say, and update), you may corrupt something, causing system instability. give it a while and see if it does something on it's own.
